Can You Lose Control In Hypnotic Trance?

If you are considering hypnosis, then this is an exciting time for you. I have run a clinical practice with advanced hypnotherapy in Cardiff for several years. And clients usually have questions about hypnotherapy. They are curious to know why hypnosis is different, and how it can help.

Wherever you are, your concerns and questions are probably the same:

  • What is hypnotherapy?
  • Will I be in control?
  • Will “it” work for me?
  • Is it safe?

You could write a whole book on these. So for now, let’s look at them in turn.

Hypnotherapy is the therapeutic use of hypnosis to create change. More specifically, “trance” is the fixation of attention. Have you ever been a million miles away? I remember watching the TV show “Lost” and being completely “lost” wondering what was going on. I was totally absorbed in the characters and plot. When I watched an episode, nothing could have awoken me from that “TV Trance”.

In fact I am still in a trance, trying to figure out just what happened in the final season.

When our first baby was born, I was literally mesmerized: I would stare at him for hours without being distracted. Cute babies are very hypnotic. They absorb all your attention for long periods of time, no matter what problems you might otherwise be facing.

That’s all trance is: the fixation of attention.

However, in hypnosis I use a specialised form of trance that gets you even more focused. In this state, you are able to literally affect the way you think and feel.

Hypnosis helps you enter this state where your focus is absorbed on the outcome you have. A hypnotist typically uses several techniques to help you change. These might include:

  1. Positive suggestions
  2. Visualisation or mental rehearsal
  3. Bringing back to life happy, positive feelings or a feeling of increased motivation (”Revivification”)

You are already doing all of these all the time anyway. Every time you have a thought or engage in self-talk, you are programming your mind. That is why you are entirely safe with hypnosis. A good hypnotist works with you to find out the problem, and how you want to be different. He then scripts new suggestions for you so you, in effect, say them to yourself.

That also means that a hypnotist can never make you think, do or be anything you don’t want to. Sometimes people think that they can come to see me and I will push a switch to make them stop smoking. Not so!

What I can do is work with a person who is motivated to change. I help them “rescript” the way they talk and feel, so they can faster achieve their goal.

Any form of therapy is a relationship. And the degree of change that you experience is the degree to which you engage with that therapy. It is vital to understand this because a hypnotherapist wants to help you help yourself. And the only way to do that is to approach the therapy in a spirit of positive expectation and participation.

One of my Virtual Gastric Band weight loss hypnotherapy clients e-mailed me recently to tell me, “I am surprised. I found I was eating less and finding it easy to resist chocolate. But it seemed natural to me. I thought I was going to be a robot!”

You are not going to become a robot, but you can increase your belief and motivation to make change.

Hypnosis is about getting into a state of concentration, and a hypnotist can help you do that. In that state you can consistently access the latent resources you had all along to solve your problem. You tap into your inner strength. It means that you will learn to have much more control over your mind, over your breathing and over how calm and relaxed you feel.

Sometimes a person calls me and is anxious about hypnosis and they also are anxious to change. I say to them, “Look, I can teach you how to relax deeply if you are willing to learn. It means you will finally be in control of how you feel. You can even learn to improve the way you feel and take more positive actions. Would you like to have more control than you’ve ever had before?”

Hypnotherapy is about putting you back in control. If you have a fear, habit or addiction that is frustrating you or ruining your life, then consider hypnotherapy. Cardiff is where my practice is based, and there are other excellent qualified hypnotherapists all over the world.

Hypnosis was recognised and approved by both the British Medical Association (BMA) and the American Medical Association (AMA) way back in the 1950s. In 1957, Pope Pius XII even endorsed it for medical use. So it has a proven record, and unlike many drugs today, hypnosis has no known negative side-effects.

One last thing: hypnosis is very similar to day-dreaming and, as such, is very safe. The most important consideration is that you e-mail or call the hypnotherapist you want to work with and chat with them. All therapists specialise in certain areas, and you won’t necessarily feel rapport with all of them. So you need to call up and find someone that you feel 100% comfortable with.

In my Hypnotherapy Clinic in Cardiff, I have seen hundreds of people change with trance. The clients that change fastest always have a powerful reason to make a shift. So take a moment now to consider this powerful question, “Why am I motivated to change and take action now?”

Signs of Hypnotic Trance

When training to be a hypnotist it is extremely important to be able to spot the signs of hypnotic trance. These signs indicate when your target has been hypnotized and is ready to absorb your hypnotic suggestions into the subconscious mind.

Look for these Signs of Hypnotic Trance

Blinking rate slows down.

Eyes appear glazed over.

Eyes redden due to increased blood flow.

Eyelids flutter.

Eyes close entirely.

Breathing slows down.

Pulse slows down (check neck for this sign).

Facial muscles become completely relaxed.

Muscles around the face, particularly the eyes, twitch.

Face becomes slightly paler.

Target becomes “immobile”.

Target’s voice becomes slower and deeper.

Instinctive reactions greatly reduced.

No reaction to external noise.

You have their complete attention and focus.

People don’t tend to display every single one of these signs of hypnotic trance, but if you see a handful or more then you can be sure that you have sufficiently hypnotized your target to accept your suggestions.

How To Perform Self Hypnosis

Good hypnotherapists are quite difficult to find and are usually expensive to hire due to their many years of learning and experience. However there is a way round this. Not a lot of people know this, but a hypnotherapist merely guides a person into trance – they help them achieve a trance state. It is up to the subject to actually make this happen. This means that it is perfectly possible to hypnotize yourself.

A trance state is actually a very natural state of mind that most of us fall into several times a day. It is best described as a daydream like state – not some weird zombie like state that the media often portray it as. It is like when you are deeply engrossed in a book or TV. It also often happens when driving. You may realise that you drove several miles and can barely remember the journey. You drive safely, but cannot remember doing it as you tranced out. The reason you still drive safely was that your conscious mind was tuned down, and you were using your more intuitive subconscious mind to drive.

A hypnotic trance is a means to quieten your conscious mind, allowing you to better communicate with your subconscious mind, which is the part that drives us, holds our beliefs, habits and fears. You can talk to a smoker about how smoking is bad for them, and them usually whole heartedly agree. However they still continue to do it. This is because you have talked to them on a conscious level. Their conscious mind knows that it is a bad habit, but it is their subconscious mind which drives their urges. In a trance you can more easily talk to the subconscious part of the mind. This is why hypnosis is so effective in a therapeutic setting.

I will show you a very simple technique to get yourself into a trance.

Get yourself comfortable, either seated or led down, and make sure that you won’t be disturbed for at least half an hour. Close your eyes and take 20 slow deep breaths, saying to yourself the words ‘relax 1′, ‘relax 2′, ‘relax 3′ and so on, on each out breath. You will notice how you feel deeper relaxed with each number you count. Do this until you reach 20.

Now imagine yourself sliding down a dark tunnel that has a white spot in the distance. Spend a minute or two sliding down this tunnel. This white spot gets bigger and bigger as you slide closer and closer, until eventually you emerge into a pleasant place. It could be anywhere you choose, such as a secluded beach or a garden. Enjoy this haven for a few minutes, and try to visualise it as vividly as you can, using as many of your senses as you can. Use touch, smell and sound as much as you can.

Congratulations, you have entered a hypnotic trance. If done regularly, this technique will really help you in life. Many problems in life are as a result of excessive stress and not enough relaxation. It can effect your energy levels, productivity, mood, motivation, happiness, and even your immune system. Almost every area of your life will improve if you spend just 10-15 minutes per day doing this. Try it every day for a week and see what a positive impact it can make to your life.

Using Self Hypnosis Scripts

With the rise in popularity of self hypnosis an increasing amount of people are turning to self hypnosis scripts to make the whole process easier for them.

A self hypnosis script is almost like a guide to entering hypnotic trance and then making the improvements that the person wishes to make. You can find an example of a free self hypnosis script that I personally wrote in my article Creating a Self Hypnosis Trance.

Self hypnosis can be broken down into three sections. The first is the hypnotic induction which allows the subject to enter a hypnotic trance. Next is the deepener which, as the name suggests, deepens the hypnotic trance. Finally the last section is the hypnotic suggestions. When performing self hypnosis you can tailor these to your specific needs. For example you could place suggestions that you want to have more motivation at work, or that you want to take more time to relax with your family. Whatever your needs they can be accomplished with self hypnosis.

It can be hard to find good self hypnosis scripts. Many sites claim to give them away for free but most of the time this is a blatant lie (you’re taken straight to a store where you’re asked to pay) or the quality is poor at best. The alternative is paying for them but this can be costly as sites like HypnosisDownloads charge $12.95 for just one script.

Thankfully it seems there is now a solution to this as HypnoBusters have just released The Ultimate Self Hypnosis Book. The book contains 6 inductions, 15 deepeners and 85 self hypnosis scripts which cover an amazing array of topics. If you’re serious about your self hypnosis then this is the book you need. It’s currently available on their site for $100 although if you use the link below you can get a 20% discount which takes the price down to $79.96. You get 85 scripts plus some other bonuses for that money, at HypnosisDownloads you’d only be able buy 6 scripts at $12.95 a piece!

They’re very helpful over at HypnoBusters too, they even help me set up this blog in fact. So if you’re looking for good quality self hypnosis scripts look no further. Click the link below and grab yourself a copy now.

Triggering A Hypnotic Trance

Here’s the thing: every once in a while, you get a client whom you just can’t seem to bring into trance. Some subjects are more receptive to getting in that hypnosis trance than others are, but that doesn’t mean that just because somebody doesn’t easily go into that trance that they can’t. Just about everyone can be hypnotized. If you ever run into problems during one of your hypnosis sessions, then you’ll want to continue reading this.

Your client simply sometimes doesn’t seem to be responding. They will tell you that they are getting “nothing.” If this happens, just don’t give up! There are tons of things that you can say to your client to start a trance. Simply instructing your subject to pretend for a bit as if they are NOT getting nothing can actually make them get something. You can then ask your subject to describe in detail exactly what they’re thinking and feeling. If they complain or notify you about any aches or pains they tell you about, that could be a real clue that you need to spend some extra time relaxing that part of their body.

Some clients relax more naturally than others do. There are several different levels of relaxation, and telling your client that it is ok if they are simply in a light relaxed state will often make them feel better about their current situation and can often make them relax more. Being in a state of light relaxation is certainly better than not being in a state of relaxation at all.

If your client seems uncomfortable getting hypnotized, you must be sure to reassure them. Let them know that “Hypnosis is completely safe” and “This will be a very positive experience.” Continue to use positive statements like these as you’re going through your relaxation exercises with them.

After reading this article, you should know three easy fixes for triggering a trance. Many times, you will find yourself with a person that doesn’t easily go into a trance. If you find this happening, just ask your client to simply pretend that they’re getting something, let them know that it is alright if they are only getting a very tiny amount of something, and remind them of the benefits of hypnosis.
