How To Use Self Hypnosis

To begin with, you will need to make sure that you will not be disturbed for at least half and hour, preferably an hour. Turn off phones, and tell family and friends not to bother you for a while. Find a comfortable place. Somewhere that is neat and tidy, and of a comfortable temperature. Subdue the lighting if this helps you. If you wish, you could light some candles and burn some incense. You can be seated, or lie down – whichever is most comfortable for you. Importantly make sure that your legs are not crossed, as you could end up going numb after half an hour!

  • Close your eyes and take 10 slow deep breaths – in through the nose, and out through the mouth. Say to yourself the word ‘Relax’ on each out breath.
  • Now imagine yourself at the top of 10 steps, with a door at the bottom. With every slow step you take down, feel yourself becoming deeper and deeper relaxed.
  • When you get to the bottom open the door to your ideal place of relaxation. It could be a beach, a garden, anywhere. It could be somewhere real, or imagined.
  • Try to use as many senses as you can. Take a good look around. Pause and listen to any sounds. Perhaps you can hear the call of a bird, or the breeze gently blowing. Perhaps you can smell the sweet scent of flowers, or the salt in the sea? Touch objects, and make it as real as you possibly can.

This is a great technique to help relaxation, and your ability to relax will improve the more you do this. Most of us do not relax anywhere near enough, and it damages our health in many ways. Stress weakens our immune systems, causes irritability, anxiety, and unhappiness. Even if you just do relaxation work, you will massively improve your overall health in almost every area. If you are struggling with this technique, then persevere. Getting into a hypnotic state is a skill that will improve over time. Don’t expect too much, you will probably still be aware of what is going on around you. It may be worthwhile visiting a clinical hypnotherapist, or buying a recording at least once, in order to experience the feeling of a trance. When you have experienced a trance a few times, you will be more informed as to what state of mind you are seeking.

You can also take this self hypnosis a little further if you wish. You can learn to give yourself specific therapy the more you practice. Here are a few techniques you can use after you have reached number 5.

What the mind imagines, it believes has really happened. If you imagine something bad happening to you, you will feel the emotions as if it is really happening. Success breeds success, so if you visualise yourself achieving something, then it will help you to do just that. You may wish to visualise yourself slimmer, healthier or wealthier for example. Or you may wish to visualise yourself having achieved something, such as a promotion or a new job. Make the image as real as you can, use all of your senses, and do this as often as you can.

You are only limited by your imagination. In fact you should notice that your creative powers increase the more that you use self hypnosis, as your mind becomes more accustomed to utilizing its creative powers. Stick with it. What I sometimes find is that people will stop using hypnosis once they have made the necessary improvements that they wished to make. However this may enetually deny the overall benefits of the increased relaxation, as things may slowly slip back to where they started. Set a specific time to do it, even if it is only once a week. If you have specific issues that you wish to deal with, then increase this accordingly, perhaps every day for a few weeks.

Easy to Learn Self Hypnosis Techniques

If you want to learn self hypnosis techniques there are a number of different ways to go about it. If you’re the kind of person who learns well from books, you could start your quest with Amazon. There’s a good selection there and you can check the feedback from other people as well.

But if you prefer to learn using a mixture of reading, audios and videos then here are some suggestions for you.

1. Start with pre-recorded MP3s

These are available inexpensively and are an excellent place to start learning self hypnosis. For less than the price of a pizza, you have access to a professionally recorded self hypnosis session that tackles the precise problem you’re trying to cure. A lot of people don’t go any further than this when they realize just how easy it is to hypnotize yourself with these hypnosis downloads. But they can also be an excellent model for your own hypnosis sessions. They allow you to test out different hypnotic induction methods and see which works best for you.

2. Get hold of a pre-written script

Again, these are a great place to start as – providing you’re careful where you buy them – you can be certain that they’re professionally written and will contain the right series of commands to put you into a hypnotic trance and carry out the instructions that you want to happen. All you need then is to record the session on your computer – the built in microphone is OK for this although if you’re doing regular recordings it will pay to get a better model – and transfer the file to your iPod or burn it to CD. Your version of Windows may have some sound recording software but if it doesn’t then get hold of Audacity which is free and top quality.

3. Start writing your own inductions

The hypnotic induction is the method you use to put yourself into a hypnotic trance. These are probably the easiest place to start when you move away from pre-written scripts as the wording isn’t as critical as the main hypnosis session itself. Model your hypnotic induction on some of the recordings you’ve already bought or ones that you’ve enjoyed using. Most of the time, you’ll start with breathing deeply as this will begin to relax you. Then find a peaceful, tranquil location. Explore it, notice the feelings, sights, sounds and smells. Heighten your sense of awareness of these but also allow yourself to relax and go deeper into hypnosis. Maybe use a deeper such as going down a set of stairs and moving deeper into trance as you progress down them.

4. Move on to the main scripts

These need to be carefully worded. Make sure that any commands you place are unambiguous. Our subconscious mind has great difficulty processing negatives – if I say to you don’t think about that white rabbit racing around saying “I’m late” then you have to bring that image to mind before you can dispose of it. Keep everything positive wherever possible and make sure that there is only one potential outcome of any statement. If you begin to use negatives, go through and re-word them. This is really important!

5. Maybe start hypnotizing other people

OK, so this isn’t self hypnosis any longer but it’s the logical extension. Like everything else, it’s something you need to practice. The good news is that the other person will have their eyes closed for most of the session, so there’s nothing stopping you having some notes to refer to while you’re doing this!

Important Rules For Self Hypnosis Scripts

Self hypnosis is an effective way to re-program your mind by communicating directly with the emotion-based subconscious mind. You can change your behavior and alter your deep-set beliefs and habits by making direct suggestions to your subconscious mind while under a state of hypnosis.

However, to make self hypnosis (or hypnotizing others) work, you must communicate using the language of the emotion-based subconscious mind.

The 7 critical rules for writing self hypnosis scripts that really work are presented below:

1. Always word your self hypnosis scripts for positive change. Saying you will stop, lose, or not do something is negative; your mind first has to visualize doing something, and then take the negative to comprehend these kind of commands. This means the mind first reinforces doing the undesired activity before it can interpret not doing it. Instead of saying you will lose weight, eat less, or stop eating sweets, say you will become lean, eat healthy, or increase your metabolism.

2. Repeat suggestions frequently to maximize effect, but avoid clichés. Find multiple ways to reiterate the same concept several times throughout your self hypnosis scripts.

3. Personalize suggestions to deal specifically with current goals. In your recorded self hypnosis scripts, do not say “you are”; instead say “I am”. To increase effectiveness, direct the subconscious mind to repeat your suggestions quietly to itself in first person.

4. Use a detailed, progressive approach that flows along a logical growth path when creating your self hypnosis scripts. For example, – I am steadily losing weight every day to reach my ideal weight of 115 pounds – is better than saying – I will lose weight. The first case presents a progressive suggestion with a time factor and an end goal as a target. The second case is negative and has no definitive goal. This is one of the most important rules for self hypnosis scripts that really work.

5. Ensure all suggestions are simple, clear, & in the present or progressive tense. Never refer to past conditions, and use progressive case (i.e., using action verbs ending in -ing-; becoming, growing, & getting are a few goods examples) to bypass the critical conscious mind.

6. Use visualizations; make the subject see himself or herself after the change has occurred (or as the change is occurring). Also use words that engage emotions such as vibrant, sparkling, thrilling, wonderful, powerful, radiant, loving, generous, exciting, delightful, and beautiful. The more vivid and dramatic the image, the more effective it will be since visualizations are suggestions.

7. Direct the subject to reflect on the results of the change after your self hypnosis scripts have finished making all the suggestions. You can direct the subject to reflect while still in a hypnotic trance or immediately after waking up. Either way, the subject should sit quietly and envision himself or herself after the change while the hypnotist says nothing.

All 7 of these rules are not required to succeed with hypnosis, and you may find most self hypnosis scripts commercially available do not contain all these elements. However, if you follow all 7 rules in the scripts you write for yourself, you will see dramatically improved results from your self hypnosis scripts.
