Many people in the United States are finding various ways, which can help them to quit smoking. People who want to stop smoking will be delighted to know that smoking can be stopped effectively with the help of hypnotherapy. However, there are also mandatory requirements that a person needs to furnish for successful long-term smoking cessation. These requirements include a solid commitment. Without a commitment nothing will work and it will spoil your endeavor towards this noble cause.

A dedicated commitment coupled with hypnotherapy always works wonders for the person who wants to quit smoking.

Hypnotherapy is a therapy, which is undertaken with the person in hypnosis and is frequently applied in order to modify the person’s behavior, attitude and emotional content as well as comprehensive conditions such as dysfunctional habits, stress-related illness, pain management, anxiety and personal development.

In hypnotherapy, the person who wants to quit smoking is disconnected from the real emotions and sensations. During hypnotherapy, the person is fully alert and attentive, but the mind is conditioned to follow what is suggested. These suggestions are nothing but dissuasions to the urges that tempt the person to light a cigarette.

Hypnotherapy also teaches the person to establish a strong motivation to forsake the vice. It also tells the person about the dangers of smoking and the advantages they will gain if they quit smoking.

Hypnotherapy also programs the person’s brain by repeating suggestions to quit smoking, which helps the person get over the addiction. The brain takes the suggestions and uses it as the person’s normal behavior. As all these suggestions are positive and work towards overcoming the habit of smoking, the person forsakes the idea of smoking and becomes a non-smoker.

Furthermore, hypnotherapy also has sessions that cover psychological manipulation. In this, the person who wants to quit smoking is made to realize the positive perceptions, and this involves strategies, which help to avoid the ambushing attacks of relapses. The main thing about hypnotherapy is no matter for how long the person has of smoked, hypnotherapy helps to overcome the habit of smoking.

It is estimated that a person undergoing hypnotherapy for the first time has a 25% chance of quitting the habit. This success rate increases and reaches up to 66% if the person undergoes multiple hypnosis sessions. The side effects of hypnotherapy are also very mild as compared to other quit smoking therapies and can be overcome quickly by discontinuing the process of induction. At times a person may fell dizzy and may even develop various degrees of nausea at the time of induction.

Without a doubt one of the most popular reasons that someone gives for trying hypnosis is to help them quit smoking. By the time they are sitting in the office of a hypnotist who is trained in quit smoking hypnotherapy, they have usually exhausted all options in their quest and are really prepared to try anything having given up on using their willpower alone to stop.

Now many people view hypnosis as a bit of a con and cannot really see any value in using hypnosis to stop smoking. On the other hand those who have successfully undergone some form of hypnosis program know it works and also know the challenges they faced when trying to quit on their own. As strange as it sounds hypnosis is without a doubt the most popular of the non-drug based quit smoking programs.

And it could not have gained such a following if there was not something of value in the process. It is still an unfortunate fact that even in this day and age many people see hypnosis as nothing more than making seemingly normal people bark like dogs. They forget that hypnosis is often used in medical and dental procedures and is often a major part of counseling and psychotherapy.

Barking like a dog does not really have much to offer someone who is looking to hypnosis to help them stop smoking and so obviously has no place in a clinical hypnotherapy setting where the client is seeking help.

So how exactly does hypnosis work to help someone quit smoking ? Hypnosis is nothing more or less than the power of imagination and suggestion. A skilled hypnotist can quickly and easily put someone into an hypnotic trance state where they have an increased ability to imagine more vividly the suggestions that the hypno-therapist is giving them. Not only is there imagination more vivid the suggestions they are given, in this case suggestions in relation to stopping smoking, are accepted without judgment or evaluation and most importantly acted upon.

A typical quit smoking hypnosis session begins with a discussion about what hypnosis is and specifically how hypnosis can help. A detailed case history is then taken where the specific details of the clients life in relation to smoking are taken. This part of the quit smoking hypnotherapy session is all about putting the person at ease making sure they understand what will happen during the session and help both the hypno-therapist as well as the person about to be hypnotized understand a little more about their smoking problem

Once the preliminaries have been taken care of the hypnosis can start. There are a variety of ways that hypnosis can be used to help someone stop smoking. In days past the preferred method was aversion therapy.

With aversion therapy the hypnotist gives the client suggestions that will make them feel sick about their smoking. All kinds of disgusting and vivid images and scenes are created that can quite easily make the person being hypnotized quite ill whenever they even think of smoking. While aversion therapy can be a very effective method , problems can occur when a person who has undergone aversion therapy encounters cigarette smoke out in their day to day life.

Today aversion therapy is often used as a tool of last resort if other techniques have not worked. Most quit smoking programs that utilize hypnosis have some form of modified aversion therapy as part of the program. The reason why is because aversion techniques work very effectively, its just that the hypno-therapist and the client need to be aware of possible consequences when using this stop smoking technique.

These days a more ecological approach is typically used where positive suggestions in relation to health and being healthy are used to move the person wanting to stop smoking towards something compelling and highly desirable. Fresh breath, more energy, greater feelings of wellbeing, being fit enough to keep up with the kids could be some positive suggestions used in a quit smoking hypnosis session.

Many quit smoking hypnosis programs will claim to be able to help you stop smoking in a single session. And for many this will be the case. However you must remember that everyone is different and if your first session did not give you the result you were looking for it does not mean that hypnosis cannot help you it may simply mean that you need a few more sessions. Many programs offer a course of treatment over a period of time 3-4 sessions over a couple of weeks for example. You may find that this style of treatment is more to your liking

When looking at any quite smoking program do your research and find an approach that works for you. Quitting smoking is probably one of the most powerful things you can do to dramatically improve the quality or your life now and well into the future.

If you have reached the point of almost giving up hope of quitting on your own you might want to give some serious thought to signing up for a course of quit smoking hypnotherapy. You have got nothing to lose apart from your smoking habit and a lot to gain in a life time of improved health and wellbeing.

When most of the people hear the word “hypnosis”, they will automatically imagine a person waving a pocket clock in order to make another person to act like a chicken, dog or walk like’s zombie or even do action against their will (kill someone, rubbing people).

But the reality is different; hypnosis is a mental state (according to “state theory”) or imaginative role-enactment (according to “non-state theory”), in which the hypnotized person is not in a semi-sleep state but better he is hyper attentive and has absolute free will. This mental state is induced by a procedure known as a hypnotic induction (which is commonly composed of a long series of preliminary instructions and suggestions) or may be self-administered (”self-suggestion” or “autosuggestion”). Braid, the inventor of hypnotism (hypnotism derive from the term “neuro-hypnotism” – nervous sleep), described hypnotism as a state of physical relaxation accompanied and induced by mental concentration (”abstraction”).

In 2005, a new definition of hypnosis, derived from academic psychology (Society for Psychological Hypnosis):

“Hypnosis typically involves an introduction to the procedure during which the subject is told that suggestions for imaginative experiences will be presented. [..]. A hypnotic procedure is used to encourage and evaluate responses to suggestions. When using hypnosis, one person (the subject) is guided by another (the hypnotist) to respond to suggestions for changes in subjective experience, alterations in perception, sensation, emotion, thought or behavior.”

According to Freud, the mind can be divided into two main parts:

   * The conscious mind includes everything that we are aware of. This is the aspect of our mental processing that we can think, act and talk about rationally (when you extend your hand in order to retrieve something). A part of this includes our memory, which is not always part of consciousness but can be retrieved easily at any time and brought into our awareness (like a definition). Freud called this ordinary memory the preconscious.

   * The unconscious mind is a reservoir of feelings, thoughts, urges, and memories that outside of our conscious awareness. Most of the contents of the unconscious are unacceptable or unpleasant, such as feelings of pain, anxiety, or conflict. According to Freud, the unconscious continues to influence our behavior and experience, even though we are unaware of these underlying influences (just like when you lock a door but later on you are not sure if you locked or not the door, because our unconscious mind told us to get the key and lock the door).

But what happens when we are hypnotized? When we are hypnotized, our conscious mind takes a step back and let our unconscious mind to take over. By that, the hypnotherapist has access and can suggest to our unconscious mind that we don’t like to perform an action, even if when we are awake we love to perform that action (smoke a cigar, drink a cup of coffee, get drugs, etcetera). This procedure is safer more than any other treatment, because if we try to give up to something by taking pills or do other stuff those can lead to harmful effects over our body, but hypnosis only teach our brain to reject them (there is no physical action against our body). And since the changes are made over our unconscious mind, we will remember that we don’t like to perform that action only when we try to perform that action.

Consequently hypnosis is a great therapeutic tool for getting rid of any kind of addiction.

As a fact, we all experienced hypnosis but we never thought of that, when we watch a movie, when we read a book, that is also a kind of hypnosis (self hypnosis).

Because of the fact that the subject is susceptible to suggestion and because the response to suggestion can lead to alteration in perception, emotions and behavior, hypnosis is used as treatment for many phobias, pain sufferance, addiction and many more.

Since AMA (American Medical Association) agreed that hypnosis can be use as an alternate treatment, more and more researches were made. Current research showed that hypnosis is the best treatment for addictions. For example, for a group of smoking addicts, different treatments were applied in order to quit smoking. Here are the results.

With no support only 3% manage to quit without a relapse. Using a substitute for nicotine only 22% did quit smoking. Same percent was able to quit but using medication, or behavioral modifications or single session hypnosis.

Using multiple strategies, 43% quit smoking and didn’t have a relapse. But using multiple sessions of hypnosis 63% quit smoking.

This is only a kind of research conduct. Other research revealed that suggestions given in a hypnotic state, even once, can produce actions in human beings that are the same type of actions that would have resulted from more long-term conditioning and practice (research made by Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College London)

When it comes to addiction, every person that has an addiction will act the same way (being drugs, alcohol, sex or game computers). It is proven that hypnosis can alter the way we feel about our addiction. In order to change our lives we have to change our beliefs (which are stored in our unconscious mind), and hypnosis is the best way to change those beliefs.

When we do something we enjoy, our brains start to release chemicals in our body.

That’s why is very easy to become addicted to a substance (caffeine – from coffee, nicotine – from cigarette, pain killers, or worst, drugs), or an activity (work, watching TV, playing computer games). The term video-game addiction encompasses all genres of games, but it is often associated with MMOG’s (Massively Multiplayer Online Games).

According to Dr. Brent Conrad: “Most people can play most games without becoming addicted, just as most adults can drink alcohol on occasion without becoming addicted or gamble from time to time without losing their life savings”. Scientists are discovering with recent research that the genes which people inherit may include “addictive genes”. Those that do get hooked end up with ruined lives.

Further Information

No matter how serious the addiction, hypnosis has been medically proven as a safe and extremely reliable way to deal even with computer gaming addiction.

A person who has experienced some measure of success in life may balk at the idea of self confidence hypnosis. If one is quite comfortable with his own abilities, then why rock the boat, so to speak. This belief may exactly be the reason for that person to take a second look at himself.

As actively promoted by its proponents, self confidence hypnosis may be helpful to those who have fears in these common scenarios: public speaking, socializing with people or going to job interviews. Immediately, a person who may be intrigued by hypnosis but don’t believe that he has self confidence issues may be convinced that he has no use for it. The fact is, hypnosis is not just limited to overcoming anxiety in speaking to large crowds.

Self confidence, as distinguished from self-esteem, is the belief in one’s ability or capacity to do something. To put it in another way, even if one has confidence in one thing, it does not necessarily follow that he has confidence in all things. A person who has no qualms in selling his new idea in the boardroom or in persuading his case to a hostile jury may doubt himself when it comes to haggling for the best price in buying a car or in any other situation that he is not usually accustomed to be in. After all, Nobody is perfect in every single area in his life; although it might not be crippling the person outright, he may do better if he opens to the possibilities of what hypnosis can do to him.

Most people also have past experiences that could have shaken their confidence at some point. This could be an embarrassing situation in school, a major gaffe in their first job or a car accident caused by his negligence. Others may have had painful childhood traumas such as being told they were not beautiful or capable enough or that they should not even try something because they would only fail at it. Self-professed confident people may proudly say that they have gotten over these things by shrugging them off or pushing them out of their minds. However, while they may have had pushed them out of their conscious minds these are still very much taking residence in their subconscious minds. These beliefs would then, unbeknownst to them, rear its ugly head in the way they make decisions or behave. The only way they can take control of these negative beliefs is to extract them out of their subconscious mind and have it replaced by positive ideas. Hypnosis can certainly address this type of issue.

Another example of one’s confidence being shaken are those times when life throws him a curve ball and he is put into a situation that he needs to adjust to, but may not know exactly how. It may be during the period when one is laid off, for instance, or when one needs to relocate to a new and unfamiliar place or country or in any situation when one is taken out of his comfort zone. Some may cope easily; others, although confident in other areas, may find these changes daunting.

Lastly, there are those milestones in life that most people go through. This can be a marriage, divorce, birth of a child or loss of loved ones. Major adjustments may be needed to go through these milestones and many often find themselves at a loss on how to proceed and would start to second-guess themselves. They may be pleased to find that there is such a thing as self confidence hypnosis that can help them sail through all these changes.

Author Bio

You may have considered trying hypnotherapy before for career enhancement or to defeat some nagging characteristic that you dislike about yourself. However, fear of the unknown may have kept you away. This is understandable, because the average person (who isn’t schooled on Freud, Mesmer and Braid) really hasn’t received much mainstream information about hypnosis outside of the movies.

It’s important to note first of all what hypnosis is and isn’t. By definition, hypnosis is a mental state which is brought on by a series of hypnotic suggestions. The full session of hypnosis usually breaks down in this way:

- Focusing (the hypnotherapists asks the client to focus)
- Relaxing (using an induction technique, the hypnotherapist guides a client to progressive relaxation)
- Deepening (when a person enters an altered state of consciousness or “trance”)
- Suggestible state (when a person reaches a state of trust and openness)
- Posthypnotic suggestion (when the therapists makes suggestions)
- Awakening (coming out of this altered state)

It’s important to realize that real hypnosis is not anything like “showbiz hypnosis.” Real hypnotherapists take time to understand their clients and discover what it is you want out of your sessions. The inquisitive process is a long one at first, as this helps both the client and therapist to learn and trust one another. The therapist must also take note of the type of language that the client uses to process information. The actual session of hypnosis can last anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour.

Hypnosis is not really about “embedding commands” into a person’s subconscious. It’s about reconditioning the person’s automatic thought process. Hypnosis works best when positive reinforcement (through suggestion) is given. Much of what you learn early in life (the manners, the thinking patterns) becomes automated process in your adulthood. Breaking away from these patterns is not always easy for people who have dealt with trauma or who had strong conditioning ingrained in them while growing up.

Sometimes the only way to rid yourself of a bad habit or to get rid of self-limiting beliefs is to change the thought process. You could say that hypnosis is an organic process, one that favors natural psychology over powerful and potentially damaging medications.

The truth of the matter is that you already are the person you want to be! You’re not cursed to be “ordinary”, nor are you unable to achieve something because of your under performing mind or body. These are all toxic thoughts that can impede your objectives.

Sometimes all it takes is a few “small steps” to change certain thinking patterns and make a great change in life. This is where hypnotherapy can help you.

This slim volume is a clear-cut guide to the hypnotically permissive manner of encouraging clients to uncover their own solutions.

O’Hanlon distinguishes this solution-oriented hypnotherapy from what he calls the traditional approach with its emphasis on treating the “causes” of problems and the outside-in focus of the hypnotherapist telling the client what to do to overcome her pathology.

“Ericksonian or solution-oriented hypnosis holds no such assumption of pathology, problem, damage, or deficit. Instead, we are oriented to people’s abilities and resources. Therefore, we use the hypnotic process to discover and connect to [to the person's inner] resources.”

This “permissive” approach is in direct contrast to the old way of conducting a session of hypnotherapy. Instead of speaking of “shoulds” and “musts” the hypnotist speaks of “perhaps” and “maybes”. The idea is both to meet the client where he or she is and to allow solutions to their problems to arise from within them.

Despite the author’s demarcation of his approach as being radically different to traditional hypnotherapy in practice surely most of us incorporate something of both methods?

Just the other day, for instance, when a Christian client spoke of herself as being immature, I said perhaps that’s true but she is moving forward and as St Paul said. “When I was a child…” and continued with the Biblical quote that was meaningful and relevant to her. Meeting the client where she is now.

O’Hanlon rightly warns (in regard to using the client’s vocabulary) “it is important to be careful here and not come across as mocking or disrespectful…”

I certainly don’t want to be “mocking or disrespectful” about this Guide but here are four items that raised my eyebrows:

1. I find the cover, with its big dog looking down at a cat, puzzling for a book about human hypnosis.

2. On almost every page there is a rubber-stamp type black and white image of an animal or bird. Contrary to the author’s assertion that such designs make the book easier to read and memorable I find these images distracting. At first glance, the book appears to be a book about pets or for children. It is neither.

3. Some of the suggested “therapeutic” behaviors are downright comical. For example, what would you think about a hypnotherapist who bounces around, speaking into your left ear while emphasizing “you can make those changes you really want to make.”

4. What have become known as NLP [Neuro-Linguistic Programming] techniques are, in my opinion, manipulative and dishonest. This one, from page 31, is both. And funny:

“The hypnotist sometimes mirrors the person’s posture or movements as a way of joining and connecting. For example, when a person crosses and uncrosses his legs, the hypnotist also crosses and uncrosses her legs. Another way to match body behavior is to vary some part of your behavior when the person changes his body behavior. That is, every time he blinks, you nod.”

Despite such hilarious portions of the book, the main thrust provides invaluable instruction for hypnotherapists – particularly those hitherto inclined to bark orders at their clients.

To this end, Bill O’Hanlon provides many specific examples of what to say and how to say it. Much of this is derived from the genius of the late Milton Erickson whose (at that time) unorthodox methods of hypnotherapy have become dogma for some devotees.

Unfortunately, you can’t package genius. How Erickson dealt with people arose from his unique talents. We can be inspired by him, we can imitate his respectful approach but we stifle the very essence of his permissive attitude when we seek to encapsulate his methods into rigid rules.

Nevertheless, the synthesis of the Ericksonian approach that O’Hanlon details at the end of the book is masterful.

Hypnotherapists new to the field and those previously stuck in the “traditional” mode will find these instructions enlightening. Especially the chapter, “Bad Trance/ Good Trance” with its table of “Symptomatic Trance vs. Healing Trance.”

Hypnotism or more commonly known as hypnosis, is a mental state or set of attitudes usually caused by a procedure known as a hypnotic induction, which is composed of a series of preceding instructions and suggestions. Hypnotic suggestions may be delivered by a hypnotist to a person or a subject (experiment), or may be self suggested (auto suggestion). In this article I’m going to share with you one of the methods used by hypnotists so that you can get to know how to learn hypnotism.

5 Steps Guide: How To Learn Hypnotism

1. Use a smooth talking voice. This won’t be your regular speaking voice but rather a tone you would use with a sleepy and tired child. The more relaxing and softer your voice, the faster you can hypnotize someone.

2. Have your subject take a deep breath, and slowly let it out. While she expels air, make her close her eyes. Then starting with the top of her body, talk to her silently so that you can bring her into a relaxed stage. For example, you can say, “Feel your shoulders. Relax your shoulders and feel them become heavier and heavier. They are loose. There is no tension in your shoulders.”

3. Praise your subject in a comfortable voice at every step as this is the most important part. Hypnotism can be pretty scary for people who don’t know what to expect next. Let your subject know everything is just fine and she’s doing everything right and correct as it will help her to stay relaxed.

4. Continue with the first three steps until you know she is hypnotized. You might have to make her relax her body parts several times as most people may take about 10 minutes to enter a hypnotic state. Signs of hypnosis are: loose, droopy muscles; slightly twitching arms or legs; changes in breathing; or eyelids that flutter.

5. Make suggestions when she is hypnotized (hypnotic suggestions). The suggestions can be serious or humorous. In this stage, please be ethical to ask something from her or someone as that person will be in a “hypnotic trance” and easier to influence. When you are ready to release her from the hypnotic state, simply say, “When I count to three, you will open your eyes and feel refreshed and active. One, two, three.”

Here’s more quick tips:

• Hypnotic suggestions are the most important part in the process of getting to know how to learn hypnotism.

• Make sure your subjects are relaxed and focused while you’re hypnotizing her or him.

• Don’t be harsh or pressure your subjects to do something while he or she is in a hypnotic trance.

• Hypnotism is also related with Hypnosis Mind Control, another powerful psychological method.

For many people, the word hypnosis conjures images that have more to do with magic than medicine.

But the truth is that hypnotherapy is a scientifically-acknowledged discipline that can be used by itself or in combination with other types of therapies to help patients achieve their goals, says Reema Shah, Mumbai-based psychologist and hypnotherapist. Approved by the American and British Medical Associations, hypnosis is “scientifically researched and can even be seen on a brain scan,” claims Dr Dayal Mirchandani, a Mumbai-based psychiatrist.

Using the subconscious
According to Shah, hypnotherapy is very effective with anxiety disorders, phobias and traumas. Addictions like smoking and drinking and even kleptomania can also be cured effectively through hypnotherapy, though results may vary from person to person. Dr Nalwa, who trained in the UK and has had patients ranging in ages from six to 60, says that generally people come for various phobias as well as marital and work-related problems. She encourages people to try hypnotherapy only if they have an open mind about it and says that often, people approach hypnotherapy as a last resort due to lack of awareness.

Susceptibility to hypnosis is the capacity of going into a hypnotic trance. Most hypnotists believe that the vast majority of the population can be hypnotized rather easily. It depends mainly on the emotional state of hypnosis subject and few other factors. Often the same person who enters into a deep trance very quickly have problems with getting hypnotized just few days later. It also works in opposite way. A person who has difficulty with getting relaxed lose them completely after their first hypnotic trance.

It should be noted that people who learn how to consciously enter into hypnotic trance enters it with less effort each time they use their hypnosis technique. Of course this is not a rule. One of the hypnotherapists states that about 5% of population cannot be hypnotized at all and just 25% can get in the deepest trance. According to him all the rest reaches different intermediate states of hypnosis. Other specialists and hypnotherapists achieves much better results which may be the result of a better approach to hypnotized person. For example Bernheim – claims that at the hospital 80% of the patients attained the state of deep hypnosis, while from the people hypnotized privately only 20%.

Susceptibility to hypnosis is not dependent on gender, education and intelligence. By contrast, it depends on:
- Age – from 5 to 17 years, somewhat higher than in other age groups
- The relationship between the hypnotist and hypnosis subjects (prejudices and animosities creates bad prognosis)
- Subject’s ideas on idea of hypnosis and value of the hypnotist.

It is worth noting that those who are somnambulists (sleeping deep, having difficulty distinguishing waking from sleep, walking in sleep) are very susceptible to hypnosis and easily fall in deep trance.

Required depth of trance.
Required depth of trance should be understood as the plan to implement suggestions structured according to the level of difficulty. This means that the command that are more difficult for hypnotized ought to be passed in the greater depth a trance. In addition, hypnotherapists use selected suggestions to determine the depth of trance. These are appropriately selected suggestions that are not too difficult to implement.

Two commonly used scales for the depth of trance.
- Descriptive Scale.

According to Forel hypnosis can be divided into three main stages:
- Light (i.e. somnolence sleepiness – is characterized by fatigue, and relaxation).
- Average (light sleep) – hypnotized subject can not open your eyes, but does not lose memory.
- Deep-(somnambulism, or deep sleep) – subject can open your eyes in a trance, speak and walk.

There are few easy ways to check how deep you can hypnotize yourself. See three basic hypnosis tests in hypnosis how to post which is continuation of this article.

If you want to learn hypnosis undoubtedly one of the most important points you need to understand fully is, how to recognise when a person is hypnotised. It’s easy to learn hypnosis, anyone can learn to become a good hypnotist. However, without a true understanding of the ’signs of hypnosis’ you will never become a successful hypnotist. Take time to learn hypnosis correctly and you will be amazed at what you can achieve.

What happens with many people who learn hypnosis is they never learn the signs of hypnosis, so their success as a hypnotist is in doubt every time they try to hypnotise a subject. After a while many of these people form the opinion hypnosis is unreliable so they slowly give up using it. Hypnosis is reliable, providing you learn hypnosis correctly. It is most unfortunate that many, many, hypnosis teachers/courses don’t understand hypnosis fully either, and therefore turn out poorly trained and informed hypnotists.

You can learn hypnosis and learn to hypnotise anybody providing the following 3 following basic requirements can be met…

1. There must be a channel of communication between the subject and the hypnotist. Obviously this is normally speech. However, a deaf person can still be communicated with so they are not excluded from being hypnotized. As a point of interest, it’s not necessary to have a person close their eyes to enter hypnosis so sign-language can be used to hypnotise a deaf person. Learn hypnosis in depth and you will learn that there is no way in which you cannot hypnotise a person.

2. The ability to follow instructions. The subject must be able to follow the simple instructions presented by the hypnotist.

3. Consent. Hypnosis is a consent state. Therefore a person can only be hypnotised if they give their consent.

Providing these 3 requirements are met a person can be hypnotised. Age, gender, or social skills make no difference. As you learn hypnosis you will quickly discover some people are more apt to accept suggestions quicker than others, and are therefore able to obtain a deep state of hypnosis in less time than others.

Hypnosis occurs when a subject’s critical factor is by passed and a selective thought is accepted by their mind. The critical factor of the mind is an aspect that develops during our forming years. Therefore children are extremely easy to hypnotise. In fact it’s likely that virtually every child has been hypnotised many times by the age of 5 years, and mostly by their mother.

If you think this sounds a little suspect ask yourself this question. “As a child did you ever hurt a finger and ask your mother to kiss it better, and when she kissed it the discomfort just disappeared?” This was a bypass of your critical factor, and by implication, the implanting of a selective thought. This would more correctly be refereed to as waking hypnosis. However, most hypnotists would not even recognise that the finger kiss is actually hypnosis. Learn hypnosis in depth and you will understand that much of our behaviour as an adult is due being hypnotised as a child.

NOTE: Since first writing this short article, many people have asked me if it’s possible to hypnotise a drunk person. The answer is simple, yes, if they can meet the 3 conditions above. BUT, they will still be drunk! Furthermore, you can’t sober them up any quicker by using hypnosis.
