Self Hypnosis and Lucid Dreaming

Here’s a transcript of a self hypnosis technique I’ve just found for lucid dreaming*. This has been taken from the book Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming by Stephen LaBerge Ph.D & Howard Rheingold which is a how-to guide on lucid dreaming containing a number of different techniques as well as self hypnosis, and can be found at Amazon.

* Lucid dreaming is a dream in which one is aware they are dreaming. Typically this also involves ‘controlling’ the content of the dream, although this is not always the case.

1. Relax completely

While lying in bed, gently close your eyes and relax your head, neck, back, arms and legs. Completely let go of all muscular and mental tension, and breathe slowly and restfully. Enjoy the feeling of relaxation and let go of your thoughts, worries, concerns and plans. If you have already awakened from sleep, you are probably already sufficiently relaxed. Otherwise you may use a progressive muscle relaxation exercise.

2. Tell yourself that you will have a lucid dream

While remaining deeply relaxed, suggest to yourself that you are going to have a lucid dream, either later the same night or on some other night in the near future. Avoid putting intentional effort into your suggestion. Do not strongly insist with statements like “Tonight I will have a lucid dream!” You might find that if you don’t succeed after a night or two following such misplaced certainty, you will rapidly lose faith in yourself. Instead, attempt to put yourself in the frame of mind of genuinely expecting that you will soon have a lucid dream tonight or sometime soon. Let yourself think expectantly about the lucid dream you are about to have. Look forward to it, but be willing to let it happen all in good time.
