Changing Behavior Patterns With Hypnosis

Whenever you mention the word ‘Attitude,’ people’s minds tend to go, unfairly, I think, to badly behaved teenagers. “That boy has a terrible attitude.” But certainly in the world of hypnosis, attitude is another word for focus. When this focus is narrowed, you start to enter a hypnotic trance.

You see, this is where people generally become so confused about hypnosis. To so many, it may only be performed in some sort of temple, with incense wafting in the air, and some chap in a black cape chanting something completely unintelligible.

If only people would come to realize that hypnosis is as natural as breathing. It’s a natural function. If more people realized this, then there’d be a lot more hypnosis success stories going round.

When your focus is strong, then it’s always hypnotic. However, what is so vitally important is the content of that focus.

If you’re a person who always expects the worst, a pessimist, then you have a negative focus and you really can’t expect to experience roaring success with such an attitude. On the other hand, if you expect your efforts to be worthwhile and productive, then your attitude is positive. In short, you expect success.

Hypnosis is about creating expectations, so if your attitude is positive and success is your expectation, then hypnosis has to be invaluable to you.

Now, these expectations have nothing whatever to do with positive thinking or merely hoping for the best. They take a step further than that and become part of you. In other words, your instincts.

Your instincts work automatically for you, so that if you have positive instincts, you’re freed from the shackles of always trying to be positive, which can be an awful trial. Especially on a Monday morning and it’s tipping down with rain!

Hypnosis helps you change patterns of thinking that aren’t helpful to you into instincts that are positive and productive. It’s easy to understand that when this happens, the advantages are tremendous. Setbacks, too, may be seen in positive ways.

All this is fine, but from where do you receive these attitudes? You learn them in 2 ways.

Other people condition them into you, or you condition them into yourself. Whenever you learn something new and you develop this knowledge until it becomes automatic, you’ve been hypnotized.

Don’t forget that hypnotism can last just a few moments – with your eyes wide open!

Whenever we consider strong negative experiences such as anger, addiction, depression, anxiety, we’re talking about them being hypnotic trance states. Why? Because they’re all so restricted, their focus so narrow that, coupled with the (mis)use of imagination, they’re automatically hypnotic.

Can You Lose Control In Hypnotic Trance?

If you are considering hypnosis, then this is an exciting time for you. I have run a clinical practice with advanced hypnotherapy in Cardiff for several years. And clients usually have questions about hypnotherapy. They are curious to know why hypnosis is different, and how it can help.

Wherever you are, your concerns and questions are probably the same:

  • What is hypnotherapy?
  • Will I be in control?
  • Will “it” work for me?
  • Is it safe?

You could write a whole book on these. So for now, let’s look at them in turn.

Hypnotherapy is the therapeutic use of hypnosis to create change. More specifically, “trance” is the fixation of attention. Have you ever been a million miles away? I remember watching the TV show “Lost” and being completely “lost” wondering what was going on. I was totally absorbed in the characters and plot. When I watched an episode, nothing could have awoken me from that “TV Trance”.

In fact I am still in a trance, trying to figure out just what happened in the final season.

When our first baby was born, I was literally mesmerized: I would stare at him for hours without being distracted. Cute babies are very hypnotic. They absorb all your attention for long periods of time, no matter what problems you might otherwise be facing.

That’s all trance is: the fixation of attention.

However, in hypnosis I use a specialised form of trance that gets you even more focused. In this state, you are able to literally affect the way you think and feel.

Hypnosis helps you enter this state where your focus is absorbed on the outcome you have. A hypnotist typically uses several techniques to help you change. These might include:

  1. Positive suggestions
  2. Visualisation or mental rehearsal
  3. Bringing back to life happy, positive feelings or a feeling of increased motivation (”Revivification”)

You are already doing all of these all the time anyway. Every time you have a thought or engage in self-talk, you are programming your mind. That is why you are entirely safe with hypnosis. A good hypnotist works with you to find out the problem, and how you want to be different. He then scripts new suggestions for you so you, in effect, say them to yourself.

That also means that a hypnotist can never make you think, do or be anything you don’t want to. Sometimes people think that they can come to see me and I will push a switch to make them stop smoking. Not so!

What I can do is work with a person who is motivated to change. I help them “rescript” the way they talk and feel, so they can faster achieve their goal.

Any form of therapy is a relationship. And the degree of change that you experience is the degree to which you engage with that therapy. It is vital to understand this because a hypnotherapist wants to help you help yourself. And the only way to do that is to approach the therapy in a spirit of positive expectation and participation.

One of my Virtual Gastric Band weight loss hypnotherapy clients e-mailed me recently to tell me, “I am surprised. I found I was eating less and finding it easy to resist chocolate. But it seemed natural to me. I thought I was going to be a robot!”

You are not going to become a robot, but you can increase your belief and motivation to make change.

Hypnosis is about getting into a state of concentration, and a hypnotist can help you do that. In that state you can consistently access the latent resources you had all along to solve your problem. You tap into your inner strength. It means that you will learn to have much more control over your mind, over your breathing and over how calm and relaxed you feel.

Sometimes a person calls me and is anxious about hypnosis and they also are anxious to change. I say to them, “Look, I can teach you how to relax deeply if you are willing to learn. It means you will finally be in control of how you feel. You can even learn to improve the way you feel and take more positive actions. Would you like to have more control than you’ve ever had before?”

Hypnotherapy is about putting you back in control. If you have a fear, habit or addiction that is frustrating you or ruining your life, then consider hypnotherapy. Cardiff is where my practice is based, and there are other excellent qualified hypnotherapists all over the world.

Hypnosis was recognised and approved by both the British Medical Association (BMA) and the American Medical Association (AMA) way back in the 1950s. In 1957, Pope Pius XII even endorsed it for medical use. So it has a proven record, and unlike many drugs today, hypnosis has no known negative side-effects.

One last thing: hypnosis is very similar to day-dreaming and, as such, is very safe. The most important consideration is that you e-mail or call the hypnotherapist you want to work with and chat with them. All therapists specialise in certain areas, and you won’t necessarily feel rapport with all of them. So you need to call up and find someone that you feel 100% comfortable with.

In my Hypnotherapy Clinic in Cardiff, I have seen hundreds of people change with trance. The clients that change fastest always have a powerful reason to make a shift. So take a moment now to consider this powerful question, “Why am I motivated to change and take action now?”

About Susceptibility To Hypnosis

Susceptibility to hypnosis is the capacity of going into a hypnotic trance. Most hypnotists believe that the vast majority of the population can be hypnotized rather easily. It depends mainly on the emotional state of hypnosis subject and few other factors. Often the same person who enters into a deep trance very quickly have problems with getting hypnotized just few days later. It also works in opposite way. A person who has difficulty with getting relaxed lose them completely after their first hypnotic trance.

It should be noted that people who learn how to consciously enter into hypnotic trance enters it with less effort each time they use their hypnosis technique. Of course this is not a rule. One of the hypnotherapists states that about 5% of population cannot be hypnotized at all and just 25% can get in the deepest trance. According to him all the rest reaches different intermediate states of hypnosis. Other specialists and hypnotherapists achieves much better results which may be the result of a better approach to hypnotized person. For example Bernheim – claims that at the hospital 80% of the patients attained the state of deep hypnosis, while from the people hypnotized privately only 20%.

Susceptibility to hypnosis is not dependent on gender, education and intelligence. By contrast, it depends on:
- Age – from 5 to 17 years, somewhat higher than in other age groups
- The relationship between the hypnotist and hypnosis subjects (prejudices and animosities creates bad prognosis)
- Subject’s ideas on idea of hypnosis and value of the hypnotist.

It is worth noting that those who are somnambulists (sleeping deep, having difficulty distinguishing waking from sleep, walking in sleep) are very susceptible to hypnosis and easily fall in deep trance.

Required depth of trance.
Required depth of trance should be understood as the plan to implement suggestions structured according to the level of difficulty. This means that the command that are more difficult for hypnotized ought to be passed in the greater depth a trance. In addition, hypnotherapists use selected suggestions to determine the depth of trance. These are appropriately selected suggestions that are not too difficult to implement.

Two commonly used scales for the depth of trance.
- Descriptive Scale.

According to Forel hypnosis can be divided into three main stages:
- Light (i.e. somnolence sleepiness – is characterized by fatigue, and relaxation).
- Average (light sleep) – hypnotized subject can not open your eyes, but does not lose memory.
- Deep-(somnambulism, or deep sleep) – subject can open your eyes in a trance, speak and walk.

There are few easy ways to check how deep you can hypnotize yourself. See three basic hypnosis tests in hypnosis how to post which is continuation of this article.

Learning Hypnotism Tips

If you are interested in how to learn hypnotism so that you can use it with maximum effect, there are some things you need to master before you can actually hypnotize someone correctly and successfully. While learning the techniques to hypnotize people, you need to become aware of your of your own capabilities and limitations and work on improving yourself. You also need to know the consequences associated with the use of different hypnotic techniques.

This article focuses on the fundamentals of hypnotizing others and the mistakes you should avoid making at all cost. Keep reading to gain insightful information on the subject of avoiding the mistakes and learning to hypnotize with success.

Among the first steps is to properly learn some of the basic phrases that hypnotists commonly use to put others in a trance. These phrases have to literally roll of your tongue; they should not be written down and read out, it will sound stilted. When speaking to the subject to put the person in a hypnotic trance, you will need to speak calmly and fluently in a soft soothing tone. When you read you will not sound natural and this kind of tone will not help the person to relax. Compose yourself even if you feel nervous, take several deep breaths and then get started. Your calm and confident manner will inspire trust and confidence in the subject, helping the person to relax into the hypnotic trance state.

Also, inducing the hypnotic trance state in a person should not be done with the use of forceful words like must or have to. Words of those type have an adverse affect on the subject and will not bring forth the kind of response you are seeking.

Do not use any kind of medication to induce the hypnotic state, this is a very wrong practice and can have seriously unpleasant side effects for the subject. More importantly medication does not induce a hypnotic state in a person.

Also, while on your journey of how to learn hypnotism, an important point to focus on is the atmosphere that you and your subject are in when you try to conduct the session. You need the right kind of atmosphere that will make the subject feel comfortable and relaxed. If you have the wrong kind of atmosphere then your subject will not feel properly at ease. If that happens, then you have failed even before you got started. The room you use should have comfortable seating and a pleasant and soothing decor. It does not mean that you have to redecorate on a grand scale, simply to ensure that the room is a pleasant one; you can achieve this by a few simple decorating ideas. You definitely need a dimmer switch to dim the lights to an agreeable ambient glow.
