Indirect hypnosis is a form of conversational hypnosis that was developed by the American psychiatrist and hypnotist Milton Erickson. Milton Erickson is recognized as the first hypnotist to use a form of hypnosis that allowed subjects to be hypnotized at their own pace through non-authoritative triggers and instructions.

Prior to Milton Erickson, hypnotists used very direct, authoritative language that commanded subjects to bend to the will of the hypnotist using instant hypnosis inductions to achieve deep hypnosis. Milton Erickson realized that using an indirect hypnosis that allowed subjects to decide for themselves to become hypnotized could be much more powerful.

Erickson had learned from his background in clinical psychiatry that the human mind is designed to resist direct commands from a source that it does not trust. His style of conversational hypnosis, Ericksonian Hypnosis, invites the unconscious mind to respond to indirect suggestions rather than authoritative commands.

Rather than inducing a forced state of hypnosis through a pattern break or traditional induction, this type of conversational hypnosis will often begin with phrases like “you have the ability to go into a trance.” This indirect hypnosis method allows both the conscious mind and the unconscious mind of the subject to decide to become hypnotized.

When indirect hypnosis is performed correctly, the subject will meet the hypnotist more than halfway throughout the session by filling in the details that the hypnotist has left out with his own images, metaphors and aspirations. The hypnotist leaves numerous gaps in his instructions from beginning to end so that the unconscious mind can create more meaningful connections on its own.

These gaps that are included in the indirect hypnosis of Milton Erickson are often referred to as “artful vagueness.” This “artful vagueness” was later adopted by linguists John Grinder and Richard Bandler to form the foundations of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP).

This type of conversational hypnosis is particularly effective in therapeutic and medical hypnosis when a subject has specific goals that he is trying to work toward. For example, a subject’s unconscious mind is much more receptive to the suggestion “you can become a sober human being” when under hypnosis than “you will stop drinking alcohol.”

Indirect hypnosis is also an excellent technique to use with individuals who are particularly resistant to the concept of hypnotism. This method lets them consciously decide to become hypnotized and have much more control over the experience than traditional hypnosis.

Covert or Overt?

The biggest difference between covert hypnotism and traditional hypnotism is the fact that one is done covertly (hidden) and the other is done overtly (out in the open). However as I mentioned above, more and more hypnotherapists now incorporate conversational hypnosis techniques into their therapeutic sessions as they can be very effective.

Speed of Induction

Covert hypnosis inductions are generally much quicker than those of traditional hypnosis. In traditional hypnosis where a hypnotherapists is treating a client they often have between thirty minutes to an hour in a single session. This gives them the opportunity to take their time and induce a very deep hypnotic trance in their client. However in covert hypnosis you may only have a few minutes to talk to the person you wish to hypnotize so the inductions tend to be much quicker, although not as deep as in traditional hypnosis.

Method of Language

You will probably be familiar of at least a “parody” of traditional hypnosis from older movies and television programs where the hypnotist is taking control of someone. Of course we know that a hypnotist can never control or brainwash a person in that sense now. As they hypnotize the person they are very direct, “You will not smoke anymore” is a good example of a direct command. However society has changed and this is no longer as effective as people are a lot more cynical and questioning of authority.

Covert hypnotism uses much softer, more indirect language as, by its very nature, it is more covert. For instance, to take the smoking example from above and convert it into indirect language you may get something more like, “You realize how expensive smoking is, how it badly it tastes and how unhealthy it is. Every cigarette shaves five minutes off your life, so why would you do it? When you smoke you’re taking valuable time off your life”. This is indirect and it gets the person questioning why they would ever want to smoke in the first place.

Eyes Wide Shut or Open?

If you’ve ever taken part, or seen, a traditional hypnosis session you will know that the client is asked to close their eyes. This is to help avoid visual distractions. Yet in covert hypnosis the person being hypnotized obviously has their eyes open. If you asked someone to close their eyes and then talked in a smooth flowing, hypnotic manner it would be crystal clear to them that you were trying to hypnotize them which is undesirable for the purposed of covert hypnotism.

Trance can still be achieved without eye closure. Signs of hypnotic trance include relaxed facial muscles, slow and steady breathing, speaking more slowly than normal in a lower pitch and blinking less often and more slowly. There are many others signs of hypnotic trance which I will soon be writing about.

However it is also the favored technique of “street hypnotists”, “stage hypnotists” and people with all the ethical fortitude of a starving rattlesnake. Generally these reprobates like to use their ‘power’ to convince unsuspecting victims that they would: A) really like to sleep with them; B) give them all their money; C) sign over the deeds to their house or D) all of the above. Unfortunately the image they portray of the conversational hypnotist as some sort of confidence trickster rather fuels the commonly held misconception of conversational hypnosis.

This is a source of frustration for those who recognise the potential of conversational hypnosis as a source of both great personal development and change as well as a fantastic tool for motivational speaking. The Fact that many within the Conversational Hypnosis field often refer to it as ‘Covert Hypnosis’ unfortunately contributes to its image as a “dark art”. It also goes someway to explaining why many are enticed to learn the techniques involved for less than honorable reasons.

Whilst the basic concepts of conversational hypnosis are easily accessible to most people, to truly master conversational hypnosis requires both commitment and some study. Conversational hypnotherapists argue that the treatment process often covers more than one session and, providing that the subject has given their permission to the participate in the entire treatment program their awareness of specific hypnotic treatment sessions is irrelevant. They also point out that when you ask someone if they would like to rid themselves of their gambling addiction at the cost of having a few conversations with a therapist most leap at the chance.

As mentioned previously one of the most important aspects of successful conversational hypnosis is to ensure that the subjects remain unaware of the process they are undergoing. The better quality courses teach you the skills and techniques you need to use covert hypnosis subtly. This can take some time to master as, inevitably, some of speech patterns used can seem a little awkward to the ear and can potentially raise the subject’s suspicions. If they become aware that you are trying to manipulate them they will become closed and defensive. This will make the process much harder (though by no means impossible).

So as you can see truth behind covert hypnosis is not that it is some cheap trick favored by charlatans and perverts but rather a respected and empirically referenced psychological technique used by professionals the world over. It’s image as a questionable practice used by drop outs as a substitute for social skills owes much to its misuse as averse its genuine potential and practical application.

How is this done? Well the idea of fractional rapport is to offer your target your complete attention for a short period of time and hook them in with an incomplete story or piece of information. Then you take all of this away. This leaves the person you were talking to wanting more and craving your attention again.

Most people know a guy who’s a bit of a jerk with women, constantly playing hot and cold, yet they are consistently surrounded by them. At first it makes no sense to you but without knowing it (in most cases) they are using fractional rapport hooks. You too can experience great success with this method, and you don’t have to be a jerk about it…unless you want to be.

For example say you have struck up a conversation with a woman in a bar and you’re getting along well. You’ve asked her questions about her life and know you’re telling her a little story about yourself (either real or made up). Now if you see that she is enjoying yourself what you can do is act as if your mobile has gone off and you’ve received a text. Tell her that there’s a bit of an emergency at work or with a family member/friend and that you have to go right away. This will be a bit of a shock to her. Here the window is open. Now you can apologise and ask for her phone number so that you can get a chance to talk again. I have never known this not to work.

That is quite an extreme example though. Another method of using fractional rapport hooks is to tell a story but leave out key details. For instance you could talk about a great holiday you had but not mention the actual destination, make your target ask questions and they will become hooked into the story.

Using fractional rapport hooks is almost like play fighting with a dog over a piece of rope. You give them a little slack but then you pull it right back in. It’s easy to do and it’s one of the few techniques which just impossible to spot from the point of view of the other person. It doesn’t feel like a game, it feels real and that is the real secret to building great rapport.

Hypnotizing Others With Conversational Hypnosis

Conversational hypnosis, as it sounds, revolves around commanding hypnosis during a conversation. This technique (which is also known as covert, black ops and underground hypnosis and NLP – neuro linguistic programming) is certainly the most effective and powerful mind control hypnosis technique and soon you will understand why.

This technique uses hand-picked words, phrases and gestures that when used correctly can gain you access to the subconscious mind of the person you are trying to hypnotize, and thus, you can change his thoughts feelings fears etc.

With this techniques you will hypnotize people while they are wide awake and have no clue that you are hypnotizing them, hence the names covert and underground hypnosis, and here lies its true power…

While other hypnosis techniques compel you to convince the person you’re about to hypnotize to get hypnotized, and make use of props and forms of speech which are not natural, conversational hypnosis does not force you to do any of that.

Use it in a ‘by the way’ sort of manner and it will have a subconscious effect on those people. They will catch the bait and won’t even know how it happened.

A somewhat modified definition of covert hypnosis is that it deals with the ability of a person to communicate with the subconscious mind of another person. After a form of affinity has been established, a counteractive idea is proposed in the form of a distraction. You walk in to a department store with no real intention of purchasing something specific. The sales person approaches you and makes a general remark, about the weather for example, and before long you are in a conversation. The objective is to change the intended behaviour – a sales person, for example, telling the client how good she will feel buying the new product. An intentional use of carefully selected words, body language, intentional gestures that seem commonplace (pointing in a certain direction) and facial expressions (a frown to the buyer to convey the unspoken opinion that she is making a mistake) in order to covertly communicate with someone’s subconscious mind. The final objective is to have the person make his own decision to change his mind.

Covert hypnosis is in effect a form of indirect hypnotism in that it seeks to achieve near hypnotic states in the listener (sometimes called “sleight of mouth”). The subject is unaware that the hypnotist is either a hypnotising him, or that anything out of the ordinary is occurring as it often takes place in the course of a seemingly regular conversation. Covert hypnosis also used in writing. This requires the active participation of the reader to have any effect. The reader must become caught up in the narrative. Just think of all those well crafted sales letters you have read which had you reaching for your credit card long before you completed your reading!
