Establish a Routine
Establishing a bedtime routine is very important. It lets your mind now that you are gearing up to go to sleep. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to go to bed at the exact same time every night but it should be reasonably consistent. On the other hand though you should aim to wake up at the same time each morning. Even weekends. While this means you might sleep less on the weekends you will drift to sleep more easily and it will be a deeper, more satisfying sleep.
A bedtime routine doesn’t have to be complicated. An example of a good bedtime routine would be to switch off the TV a hour before you plan to go to bed and then preparing a warm, milky drink to consume in the bath while reading a good book. All these activities will help to relax your body and mind before you go to bed.
Your Bed Is For Sleep
Your bed should be used for two things only, making love and sleeping. Many people read, play computer games or watch TV in bed. This is a bad habit to get into though as these activities stimulate the mind. Not only that but the mind begins to associate the bed not with sleep, but with stimulating activities instead. So when you go to bed, instead of believing it’s time to sleep, subconsciously you are expecting to read or whatever else it is you do. When you go to bed it should be to go to sleep.
Hypnotherapy
No, you don’t have to have a hypnotherapist sat by your bed lulling you to sleep! You can actually buy MP3s recorded by many well respected hypnotherapists. You can get MP3s specifically made to help you sleep better. These can be played while you’re in bed because unlike playing a computer game hypnosis is not a mental stimulant. It actually quietens mental chatter and guides you into a deep, restful sleep.
