How To Stop Smoking By Self Hypnosis

Smoking is a psychological issue wherein the mind commands the physical state to crave for nicotine, the addictive content of cigarettes. In order to drop the habit, it is therefore necessary that you deal with the problem as a psychological issue. Since the smoking problem begins in the mind, it follows that manipulating the mind will help the smoker quit the habit. This is precisely what hypnosis does.

In the hypnosis sessions, the mind is manipulated by willing it to go into a relaxed state or trance. The deeper the trance, the more effective hypnosis works in changing such bad habits as smoking. While in a trance, the hypnotized person becomes open to suggestions toward changing his outlook in life. New beliefs and ideas are repeatedly insinuated into the person’s minds that replace the old, negative ones.

The reason why hypnosis works in making us drop bad habits in favor of good practices is that our attention level and sense of right and wrong are believed to be at their sharpest when we are placed under a hypnotic trance. When the hypnotized smoker is asked to quit smoking, that person is expected to heed the suggestion.

Mind Conditioning

A smoker who wants to quit is usually advised by a hypnotherapist to envision a future scenario in which there is no cigarette in is his hand. The smoker will be encouraged to firm up his resolve that he can quit cold turkey. The hypnotherapist will pound into the smoker’s mind that it is for his and general well-being if he drops the habit. This is called mind conditioning which, when done repeatedly, always yields positive results.

I say repeatedly because you need more than one session for hypnosis to be of any effect. The number of sessions depends on how well the person undergoing hypnotherapy responds to the initial therapies. For good measure, the smoker is also asked to listen to recordings that discuss the evils of smoking. Reinforcement of the initial suggestion is the purpose of all these.

Withdrawal Symptoms

Smokers who decide to quit on their own often experience the so-called withdrawal symptoms which make the effort to quit difficult. When tobacco dependence develops and its use is abruptly discontinued, symptoms of withdrawal will arise. Among the common withdrawal symptoms are sleepiness or insomnia, increased anxiety, nausea and even diarrhea.

When the smoker is placed under a trance, the hypnotherapist is likely to explain that withdrawal symptoms happen because of the conscious belief that smoking is a habit you cannot give up easily. The mind of the smoker is then conditioned that this is not so and that the bad habit can be licked without any negative reaction from the body – if the person wills it.

The hypnotherapist then introduces a new set of responses that gives the smoker confidence that he can give up without anything happening to his body. The hypnotherapist may tell the smoker to take three deep breaths and drink a glass of water to suppress an urge to smoke.

The hypnotherapist will instruct your subconscious to equate smoking with something unpleasant or painful. Hypnosis works on the subconscious levels of our thoughts.
