The Science Behind Neuro-Linguistic Programming
Neuro-Linguistic Programming or NLP comprises the top three dominant components involving the production of human experience. These are programming, language and neurology. Man’s neurological system dictates how the human body functions; language ascertains the way we communicate and interface with other humans; and, the human programming regulates the types of world models that we create. Hence, NLP characterizes the basic dynamics among the human mind (neuro) and the language humans speak (linguistic) and how the interaction of these two affects the human body and its behavior (programming).
NLP was founded in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder, claiming that it is essential in seeking ways and means to assist people to live fuller, richer and better lives. According to Bandler and Grinder, NLP is a rapid and most effective type of psychological therapy, which can address a whole scope of problems that are likely to be encountered by psychologists, such as depression, phobias, psychosomatic illness, habit disorder and learning disorders. NLP also states that self-determination may be achieved by hurdling learned limitations, and puts emphasis on healthy functioning and general well-being. According to NLP’s founders, any can learn skills to enhance their effectiveness, both professionally and personally.
Who Uses NLP?
NLP has enjoyed popularity in the field of psychology but it remained ignored by traditional science due to issues like lack of empirical evidence, professional credibility needed to substantiate the effectiveness it claimed. Despite being popular, it hardly made its presence felt in the field of academic psychology and mainstream counseling and psychotherapy.
Nevertheless, NLP was appreciated by private psychotherapists – as well as hypnotists – with some claiming to have been trained and are practicing NLP. NLP, though, has made quite an impact on management training, the self-help industry and life coaching.
NLP is based on two basic pre-suppositions:
1. The Map Does Not Translate Into Territory. Because we are human, we do not exactly know what reality is. However, each of us perceives reality in different ways. Thus, we respond to stimuli surrounding us through sensory representational classifications. It is not reality itself which discerns how we behave but, rather, our individual neuro-linguistic charts of reality that does – and which gives our behavior its meaning. It is not exactly reality which empowers or limits us, but our maps or charts of reality.
2. Mind and Life Are Considered Systemic Processes. The processes occurring within a person and between other people and their milieu are systemic. Our universe, societies and minds form environment made up of complex systems along with sub-systems which interplay with and influence one another. It is impossible to thoroughly isolate a portion of the system from the remaining portions making up the system.
All the techniques and models of NLP are founded on the synthesis of these two fundamental principles. NLP says that ecology, wisdom and ethics do not occur directly from one specific map of the universe, because man is not of conceiving. Instead, the goal is make the richest map that acknowledges the ecology and systemic nature of human beings and the universe they live in. The people who turn out most effective are those who are able to conceive a map of the universe which permits them to understand and perceive the most number of perspectives and choices available to them.

Hypnosis in Advertising
James Vicary caused a public outcry when he suggested in 1957 that people could be influenced by subliminal advertising. He suggested that a study in which moviegoers watching a film called Picnic were repeatedly shown 0.03-second subliminal cuts for Coca-Cola and Popcorn, increased onsite sales by 58% and 18%. Since the revelation of his test the effectiveness of hypnotic messages in advertising has been hotly contested. A CIA review of hypnotic messages titled ‘The Operational Potential of Subliminal Perception’, claimed that ‘Certain individuals can at certain times and under certain circumstances be influenced to act abnormally without awareness of the influence’. Because of this, subliminal cuts were all but banned in the US when the FCC ruled that the use of subliminal messages could result in the loss of a broadcast license. In the UK and Australia subliminal advertising was also illegal, so it has been impossible to verify Vicary’s earliest claim one way or the other. Until a remarkable opportunity presented itself. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Vicary test was replicated at the International Branding Conference, MARKA2007 as part of the Hypnosis, Subconscious Triggers and Branding demonstration. The 1,400 delegates watched a few minutes of the movie used in the early research, PICNIC into which subliminal messages had been planted at six second intervals. Then, the delegates were asked to choose between two fictitious brands. One brand ‘Delta’ had been recommended using the hypnotic messages and the other ‘Theta’ had not.
When choosing between the two brands, 81% of the audience chose ‘Delta’ in preference to ‘Theta’. This suggests a convincing substantiation of Vicary’s results. ‘Even though this technique is 50 years old, there are more sophisticated techniques being used in marketing today, this demonstrates the powerful influence of subliminal suggestions the demonstration told us. ‘The subliminal cut was the mother of all hypnotic techniques and today her children walk all around you. They are everywhere, in posters, press advertising, on the radio and the T.V. They are the permissible siblings of an outlawed parent.’
Actual, current examples were then revealed of the three most common subliminal techniques used in advertising today. Each example was chosen because of its ability to change the behaviour of the public and its ability to prompt increased purchase of the product advertised. Most notable was the most watched advert on youtube in 2007, the Cadbury ‘Gorilla’. This Cadbury’s Dairy Milk chocolate advert features a gorilla playing drums to a Phil Collins soundtrack. The clip reached cult status and has been watched around 10 million times on the internet claimed a chart, published by the TellyAds.com website. It also changed the shopping habits of a generation being responsible for augmenting Cadbury’s market share by 30%.
Another example shown was the U.K’s greatest ad ever as voted by Channel 4 viewers, the Guinness ‘Surfer’. Despite being originally shown nearly 10 years ago this ad has left its mark because it still has instant awareness and very high levels spontaneous recall amongst the public. Both ads use a number of well known hypnosis and subliminal techniques to promote their products. This is by no means unusual. An analysis of the 20 most popular ads ever reveals that all of them use some form of hypnosis or subliminal techniques to sell their message.
It seems that despite early attempts to ban it, the use of hypnosis and subliminals to increase market share are widespread in advertising.

Self Hypnosis and Lucid Dreaming
Here’s a transcript of a self hypnosis technique I’ve just found for lucid dreaming*. This has been taken from the book Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming by Stephen LaBerge Ph.D & Howard Rheingold which is a how-to guide on lucid dreaming containing a number of different techniques as well as self hypnosis, and can be found at Amazon.
* Lucid dreaming is a dream in which one is aware they are dreaming. Typically this also involves ‘controlling’ the content of the dream, although this is not always the case.
1. Relax completely
While lying in bed, gently close your eyes and relax your head, neck, back, arms and legs. Completely let go of all muscular and mental tension, and breathe slowly and restfully. Enjoy the feeling of relaxation and let go of your thoughts, worries, concerns and plans. If you have already awakened from sleep, you are probably already sufficiently relaxed. Otherwise you may use a progressive muscle relaxation exercise.
2. Tell yourself that you will have a lucid dream
While remaining deeply relaxed, suggest to yourself that you are going to have a lucid dream, either later the same night or on some other night in the near future. Avoid putting intentional effort into your suggestion. Do not strongly insist with statements like “Tonight I will have a lucid dream!” You might find that if you don’t succeed after a night or two following such misplaced certainty, you will rapidly lose faith in yourself. Instead, attempt to put yourself in the frame of mind of genuinely expecting that you will soon have a lucid dream tonight or sometime soon. Let yourself think expectantly about the lucid dream you are about to have. Look forward to it, but be willing to let it happen all in good time.
